Do You Have an "Old Sofa" Belief You Can't Throw Away?

I want to share a story from my own life that came up in a conversation with my Master Your Wellness group this week—a simple analogy that changed how I view my self-sabotaging thoughts.
The Old Sofa Lesson
Do you have a piece of furniture, maybe, or an item in your possession that is so old you don't really need it, but you're so familiar with it, you can't throw it away?
For me, it’s a sofa in my kitchen. It's so old, it doesn't even belong to me. It's just there—familiar and comfortable.
This "Old Sofa" immediately became the perfect metaphor for the beliefs we carry. Just like that sofa, many of our most persistent limiting beliefs don't even belong to us. They were formed in childhood (before age 5) by a circumstance or something someone said, and now they just sit there, running a program that no longer serves us.
Hidden Under the Blankets
The problem is, these old beliefs are provocative. They are so familiar that our minds are used to them, but we often don't see them clearly.
I realized I cover my old sofa with beautiful blankets—a red blanket, an orange blanket, a pillow, a toy. If you saw it on a video call, you wouldn't see the tired, old sofa underneath; you’d just see the beautiful coverings.
Our limiting beliefs are the same way: they are covered by excuses, conditions, and familiar stories. They are so hidden, we forget the belief doesn't even belong to us, but we protect it fiercely because it’s familiar.
Making Space for the New
In order to become the new person you want to be—the person who "loves exercising," "chooses peace over overwhelm," or "eats healthy 80% of the time"—you must possess the beliefs of that new person.
But you can't bring in the beautiful, light, new furniture (new beliefs) if you haven't made space. You have to get rid of the old.
The task is not just about changing your actions; it's about uncovering the old sofa and deciding what you are going to do with it.
