As the leaves begin to turn and October sets in, the pace of life often picks up. But before you dive into another busy week of caring for others and tackling your to-do list, I want to ask you a simple, yet profound question:
Who is the single most important person in your life?
You might think of a partner or a child, but the answer should be the person looking back at you in the mirror.
I know how easy it is to forget that. I remember one chaotic evening when I was hecticly cooking dinner, rushing to manage the household while my kids buzzed around me. My 8-year-old daughter took my hand, looked straight into my eyes, walked me to the front door, and simply said: “Mama, go be happy.”
She didn't need the perfect meal; she needed the version of me that was present and calm. She knew, even then, that my genuine happiness and peace came from my time outdoors.
We are often brilliant at caring for others, yet when we look inward, how often do we ignore and neglect the one person whose energy sustains everything else? This is why self-care isn't selfish; it's a fundamental responsibility you owe to yourself.
The business of life—all the to-dos, the demands, the urgent emails—creates a kind of vacuum that constantly drains us. That feeling of being constantly exhausted, of resenting small requests, or of feeling short-tempered? That’s the sign of a cup that is not just empty, but is cracked and leaking. When we operate from that place of depletion, we end up giving to others what we don't have.
This is why we need a Vortex—a source of centered, full energy. The world is full of busy-ness, but finding that intentional way to refill your cup is what truly brings you to full capacity and peace.
When you invest in the one person who matters most—you—the energy doesn't just return; it overflows. Your personal aligned wellness creates a ripple effect: it elevates your mood, sharpens your focus, and makes you a truly supportive and magnetic presence for every single person you interact with. Being well is the best service you can offer to the world.
This week, let's make a commitment to shift our perspective. Use this three-step sequence to realign with your personal wellness. Start right now with the most essential steps.
When you next wash your hands and are in front of the mirror, pause. This is your immediate reset button.
Acknowledge your current feelings (nothing to do, just to check how you feel).
Check in with your body's tension. Inhale slowly through your nose, and with your exhale, consciously release the tension in your jaw, shoulders, and chest.
Now that you've calmed your nervous system, let's interrupt the cycle of worry. The brain cannot focus on both negative thinking and physical sensation, so use this step to ground yourself. Check in with all your senses:
Breath: How does the air feel moving in and out?
Hearing: What are the furthest sounds you can detect?
Tactile/Kinesthetic: How does your body feel against the chair? Wiggle your toes.
Visual: Look at a single object and notice its texture and color.
With your nervous system settled, you are now in the optimal state to create your best self. This is where you act from a place of feeling good.
Embody the Feeling: Don't think about the tasks you need to do, but instead, consciously embody the feeling of having successfully cared for yourself this week—the energy, the lightness, the satisfaction.
Reframing for Action: Take any negative thought that came up and reframe it into a positive intention that supports this feeling. For example, change "I have no time" to "I choose to manage my energy with intention." Act in the space of that intention this week.
The journey to true personal wellness is built on moments of deliberate choice, not grand gestures. It starts with the mirror and the simple acknowledgment that you deserve the best of your own care and attention.
The truth is, your energy is not limitless, but its impact is. Commit to putting yourself first by pausing, checking in with your body, and reframing your thoughts to embody the feeling of your best self. This commitment creates a powerful ripple effect that will elevate every area of your life.
For me, that simple choice led to three "The Wellness Vortex" non-negotiables: my outdoor movement covers my cardio as a form of formal fitness, my need to be outside, and the silence I need to connect with nature.
