I was driving yesterday, and I caught myself in a moment that I think almost everyone can relate to right now.
I noticed my posture. I was holding the steering wheel so tight my knuckles were white. My whole body was leaning forward, my chest was tight, and my shoulders were up to my ears. Mentally, I was already at my destination before the car even got there.
In that moment, I remembered my own tools. I stopped.
I physically sat back into the seat, relaxed my body, and opened my chest to take a deep breath. The shift was instant. As I sat back, I noticed my emotions shift as well. The stress simply dissipated. My mind became clear, and for the first time all day, I felt emotionally present—actually capable of feeling joy.
I realized something profound in that moment: Leaning forward is the posture of overwhelm and pain. Sitting back is your trumpet to Power.
As we enter the final rush of the holiday season, look around. You can see the collective "leaning forward" of the world. People are leaning into the rush, the stores, and the stress. But when we lean forward, we are reacting to the chaos. We are letting the environment dictate our internal state.
When we sit back, we lead our own experience.
Sitting back is the physical manifestation of the 80/20 Rule. It’s how we stay consistently charged with the joy and peace needed to enjoy this season, rather than running on empty. When you sit back, you signal to your brain that you are not in a race or a fight; you are in control.
Here are three Non-Negotiable Wellness Habits you can use right now—anywhere, anytime—to make that shift:
If you catch yourself "reaching" for the next task, email, or gift, physically sit back. Drop your shoulders away from your ears and open your chest. This simple physical adjustment breaks the stress cycle.
Breathing is the "manual override" for your nervous system. A single deep, expansive breath tells your body that you are safe and in control.
In the middle of the noise, look for the silence. Even a second of internal quiet—looking at the lights on a tree or feeling the warmth of a cup of tea—can reset your energy for the next hour.
The best part? You don’t have to take extra time out of your busy day to reclaim your peace; you just have to change your posture within it.
You will be a much greater gift to your loved ones if you are sitting back in your Power rather than leaning forward in stress. When you are present and regulated, you give others permission to be the same.
This holiday season, remember that your internal state is your highest form of global contribution. The world doesn't need more stressed people; it needs your best self, sitting back in your power, ready to lead with joy.
