Today, we are diving into the Non-Negotiable Habits of Curiosity and Intentional Breathing, specifically focusing on your food choices. Yes, still food! We recently explored the emotional connection behind comfort food cravings. While these foods bring back happy memories, sometimes they can lead to overeating.

So, how can you break the cycle and eat less without feeling deprived? The answer might surprise you: Breathing.

 

The Power of a Breath

Taking a mindful breath before you eat might seem insignificant, but it can have a profound impact on your relationship with food. It's all about your nervous system:

  • Sympathetic (fight-or-flight): Activated during stress, hindering digestion and overall well-being.

  • Parasympathetic (rest-and-digest): Promotes relaxation and optimal digestion.

By taking deep breaths before eating, you activate the parasympathetic system, leading to natural portion control and greater enjoyment of your food.

 
 
WHO are you being and WHY you eat

We often focus on "WHAT" to eat and forget that "WHO" we are being and "WHY" you eat is 80% of your nutrition success.

"Start with a breath and be curious of 'why' and 'who'."

 

Where Does Breathing Sit? (The Hierarchy)

 

This isn't just a random tip. Breathing and mindfulness are the very foundation of the Wellness Vortex Nutrition Model. Look at the hierarchy below:

  5. Practice loving yourself

Life Principle: "Transformation isn't about a change; it's about a choice, one step at a time." Choosing to pause is choosing to practice loving yourself.

 

Mindful Breathing: Steps for Success

Here is how to take that one step today:

  • The Sticky Note Reminder: Place a note near your usual eating area as a reminder to breathe before each meal. Take a few breaths or a few minutes. Think of a prayer or a moment of gratitude before the meal.

  • Savor Every Bite: Slow down, appreciate the flavors and textures of your food. Explore Fooditation (Level 2 of our hierarchy!).

  • Present Moment Focus: Put away distractions like phones and focus on the act of eating. Take these moments for the silence of eating.

  • Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to your hunger and fullness cues. Stop eating when comfortably full.

Remember Life Principle: "How we do one thing is how we do everything."

Rushing a meal is rushing your life.
