Master Your Mood: The Power of Daily Mini-Check-ins

mindset & mindfulness Nov 09, 2025

I want to talk about the simple, yet profound, power of the Daily Mini-Check-in with Yourself.

It's such a basic concept, yet we often forget it entirely. We are so busy doing what we have to do, we forget to check in on how we are actually doing. This disconnect is what leads straight to burnout and the dreaded yoyo cycle.

This practice is part of my Moments of Silence non-negotiable habit. It’s not about sitting on a cushion for an hour; it's about pausing and asking, "How am I feeling right now?" This simple question is the key to stepping out of reaction and into intentional action.

🚶 The Intentional Action Test

Yesterday was a full day that proved this test works. It involved a high-energy speakers meeting followed by an hour of pure bliss at a sound bath. Sound baths are amazing—they cleanse the nervous system.

When the sound was over, I knew my body needed something, but I had to ask: "What does my body need now?"

The answer was clear: "I want to go for a hike." That's why I found myself in the park on a warm, 80-degree day here in Dallas! This was an obvious check-in after a big event, but the goal is to practice these Daily Mini-Check-ins continuously.

Anchors for Your Daily Mini-Check-ins

We need triggers, or "anchors," that remind us to pause and ask that vital question: "How do I want to feel right now?"

These anchors make the abstract idea of self-awareness tangible and actionable. Here are some of my personal, everyday anchors:

🧦 1. The Holy Socks Story

In my drawer, I have two pairs of socks that are completely worn out—my favorite holy socks. They are just right: comfortable, caring, and tight on my feet.

When I get dressed, I check in: Do I need that extra feeling of comfort and care today? If yes, I’m wearing the holy socks. They are a physical anchor for my emotional needs.

💛 2. The Double-Sided Pillow

I have a decorative pillow on my bed that is yellow on one side (meaning happiness/fun) and pink on the other (meaning love/comfort).

When I make my bed, I pause and ask: "What energy do I need to generate today?" If I'm tired and need nurturing, I turn it to pink. If I want fun, it’s yellow. The pillow becomes my first conscious choice of the day.

☕ 3. The Conscious Coffee/Tea/Water Cup

Do you just grab the closest mug? I have cups with messages like Believe, Hope, and Be Kind.

When I pick up a cup, I check in: What meaning or reminder do I need right now? I often pick up the "Be Kind" cup before a conversation, reminding myself to be kind not just to others, but to me.

Your Evening Check-in: Releasing the Day

The final Daily Mini-Check-in is crucial for restorative sleep. As soon as you slide into bed (sitting up), ask: "What needs to be released?"

The goal is to go to sleep with an empty brain. Find your ritual: Journaling, dancing, stretching, or even cleaning the dishes—cleaning makes for a very cleansing experience!

Start Your Life With You

This process embodies the core truth: How I do me is how I do life.

Your consistency in wellness, nutrition, movement, and mindset starts with these small, conscious pauses. The Daily Mini-Check-ins are your tool to step out of reaction and into mastery.
