Your Body Doesn't Take a Vacation: Smart Eating for Summer and Beyond
Happy Sunday,
I hope you're having a wonderful weekend! Before I stepped out for a movie night, I was reflecting on some recent conversations we've had, especially around food and travel during the summer. It's often a season of holidays, getaways, and sometimes, those not-so-good emotional days. There always seems to be a time or season where it feels "not right" to start a new healthy routine.
My invitation to all of us, as we get closer to the end of summer with those final travels on our minds, is this: Don't wait until after the summer. Guess what? Then holidays hit, and it becomes a continuous cycle of never truly starting (or restarting!) a healthy routine.
Think about it: When we go on vacation, our mind takes a break β but our body doesn't! While it's tempting to enjoy every buffet spread to the fullest, our body still needs to work, digest, and process everything. So, my invitation is to consider that vacation isn't a "break" for your stomach. Our self-care, including how we fuel our bodies, remains non-negotiable, even if the methods are flexible!
Navigating Nutrition on the Go: My Top Summer Reflections
Maintaining good nutrition while traveling is often a big hurdle, isn't it? We tend to wait for a "better time." But here's what I've learned, even from my own recent vacation:
-
Preparation is 80% of Success: Healthy Snacks on the Go! I don't typically struggle with food on vacation, and that's largely thanks to preparation. I pack what I need: healthy snack bars, meal bars, nuts, and other non-perishable options that keep me fueled when hunger strikes, especially during transit or when healthy options aren't readily available. This simple step makes a huge difference! π Here are more ideas for "Healthy Snacks On-the-Go".

"Don't Feed Your Emotions; Eat How You Want to Feel." This is a concept we explore deeply in our Wellness Vortex program, and it's always relevant. It's crucial to distinguish between emotional hunger and physical hunger. A simple test: If you feel hungry, drink a glass of water. If you're still hungry, it's likely physical. If the hunger dissipates, it might be emotional.
This is where your "curiosity glasses" come in! Just like my new cat, Ophelio (who's surprisingly curious about every little piece in the house!), let's approach our hunger with curiosity. Ask: Why is this hunger here?
Remember, cravings are not the problem; they're often a solution we've come up with so far. They always have a positive intention behind them. If you crave something sugary, put on those curiosity glasses: What sweetness are you truly craving in your life? Often, food cravings aren't about the food itself.
