We just wrapped up the month of May, and it is the absolute perfect time to look ahead and get our bodies completely ready for the summer season!
But let’s be honest: when summer hits, schedules get chaotic. Routine flies out the window, and we often tell ourselves, "I’ll just wait and focus on my health later."
But let’s flip-flop that mindset right now.
There is no "later." The illusion of tomorrow is what keeps us stuck in old patterns, but the truth is, the only best time we have is right now.
With that shift in mind, I want you to ask yourself one simple question today: What is one thing you know you should be doing for your health right now?
🎯 The Power of the 1% Shift
Take that one thing and break it down into just 1%. Just 1% today, and BOOM—you've generated momentum.
I find myself sharing this exact truth everywhere I go lately. I spoke about it to the city leaders at the Murphy Wellness Day (see Post | LinkedIn), and I just spoke about it on stage yesterday at my annual Open House. No matter how big your goals are, you don't need to overhaul your entire life by tomorrow.
You won't wake up perfectly healthy, wealthy, or with restored relationships tomorrow. But the compound, accumulation effect of 1% a day completely changes the trajectory of your life.
When you look at that 1% chunk today, remember Wellness Vortex Life Principle #1: Replace judgment with curiosity. Put on your "curiosity glasses" 👓 and explore your habits without beating yourself up.
🤝 The Foundation Rule: Do Not Do It Alone
In the Wellness Vortex Habit Change Model, we focus on 15 core habits (take a quiz) that accumulate into a vibrant life. Our framework breaks habit development into Three Phases of Habit Formation, and the very first phase is all about building a solid Foundation.
To lock in that foundational phase, let me nail down the absolute most important rule of the model:
DO NOT DO IT ALONE. ASK FOR HELP.
Asking for help is NOT a sign of weakness; it is a strategy for success. It is absolutely imperative to ask for help, especially at the beginning. We think we have to white-knuckle our wellness, but the science and statistics tell a completely different story: you have a 66% higher chance of success when you pursue your goals with a team and a community.
But don't mistake asking for help with shifting the blame. Another core pillar of our framework is the Wellness Vortex Life Principle:
Accountability is your personal responsibility.
A coach or a team can guide you, but you are the one who must step up and take the actions.
🌊 The Water Pump and the Reality of Resistance
Think of this first phase of habit formation like an old-fashioned water pump. At the very beginning, you pump and pump, and you feel absolutely nothing. It takes effort, and the water hasn’t surfaced yet. That is exactly when you need a supportive community cheering you on.
As you keep going, notice the resistance. Resistance—whether it's busy summer travel, internal doubts, or old routines—is a natural part of habit building. But here is the secret: our relationship to resistance changes as we grow. The more a habit is mastered through the model's three phases, the less resistance you experience. Eventually, the water flows effortlessly, and you move directly into Momentum and Mastery.

I had the absolute honor of sharing this exact foundational framework on May 27th when I spoke at Wellness Wednesday for City of Murphy employees as part of their employee wellness program. Seeing local leaders realize that accountability is a tool for strength, not weakness, was incredible.
Then, yesterday, we kept that momentum going and celebrated this exact principle of community at my annual Open House! The house was filled with such beautiful energy, the kitchen island was working overtime as a welcome table, and my heart is completely full.
