Happy Sunday! As we dive into August, I've been doing a lot of thinking about something incredibly fundamental to our health and well-being: posture (AKA, postural alignment). In fact, it has become one of the non-negotiable wellness habits in the pillar of fitness/movement of the Wellness Vortex Model.

It's funny, sometimes we spend so much time dreaming of big fitness goals or upgrading our routines, but we forget about the "non-negotiables" we're already doing, like simply sitting or standing. For me, that realization hit hard. Growing up, I was a weak kid, even dealing with scoliosis. Fitness felt like a distant dream, yet I was neglecting the very foundation of movement in my everyday life β my posture.
This month, I invite you to join me on an inquiry into your own posture. It's not about being "perfect," but about becoming curious and understanding what your body is trying to tell you. What if a few small adjustments could make a huge difference in how you feel, move, and even prevent future discomfort?
The Power of Your Center: A Deeper Look at Posture
Today, I'd like to share a few insights about posture that I believe are truly foundational. Often, we focus on specific exercises or training, but understanding the essence of proper posture can unlock so much more.
Think about the concept of 'center.' In martial arts, in dance, in any athletic endeavor, finding your center is crucial. It's where your power, balance, and efficiency come from. Your body has a natural center, and when you align with it, everything flows better. It's not about being stiff; it's about being organized and stable.
We talk a lot about "moving from your core," but what does that really mean? It means understanding that your core isn't just your abs; it's a deep system of muscles that connects your ribs to your pelvis. When this system is engaged properly, it supports your spine like a strong corset, giving you stability and allowing your limbs to move freely and powerfully.
Posture isn't just about standing straight. It's about how you organize your body when you move, when you sit, when you lift, even when you breathe. It's the silent language your body speaks, influencing everything from your energy levels to your confidence. When you improve your posture, you're not just changing how you look; you're changing how you feel and how you perform. It's truly a non-negotiable foundation for a vibrant life.
Three interconnected levels:
Level 1. Foundation: Mental and Emotional Connection: How you feel emotionally and mentally profoundly influences your posture, and vice-versa. Confidence, stress, and mood all play a role in how you hold yourself.
Leel 2. Muscular Balance: This involves the strength and flexibility of the muscles that support your skeleton.
Level 3. Skeletal Alignment: This is the visible framework β how your bones stack up. It holds your alignment.
